Description
This Porsche 911 racing poster catches two vintage 911s running abreast with a wall of trees behind them dissolved into vertical bands, which is what a treeline does at speed and what the eye never quite registers from the roadside.
The trees are the clock. Without them the cars could be parked. Because the background has been reduced to rhythm rather than detail, the picture reports a speed it cannot show directly, and it does it with a device most viewers read instantly without being able to say why.
What the treeline does in this Porsche 911 racing poster
Vertical banding behind a horizontal subject makes an unusually stable composition, which is why this one hangs happily on its own rather than needing a group. A stairwell or a landing suits it, and so does a large size, because the banding gets more convincing the bigger it is printed.

Sixty years of one silhouette
The 911 has changed engine, chassis, cooling and materials completely while keeping a roofline that is recognisable across every one of those changes, which is why a car from any era of it reads instantly as a 911. The full lineage is at Wikipedia. These cars’ generation is not recorded here.
