Description
This Benz 300SL Gullwing black and white poster raises both doors at once in low light, which turns a car into something closer to a bird and is the single image the model has never escaped.
With one door up the car still reads as a car. With both up the roofline disappears entirely and the shape becomes symmetrical, which is why this is the pose used whenever anybody wants the model recognised in silhouette. Low light strips the paint back to outline and makes the symmetry the only thing left.
Both doors up: the Benz 300SL Gullwing black and white poster
Symmetry hangs centrally and formally, so this is the one to put on a chimney breast, over a bed, or dead centre above a console table, where an asymmetric composition would look like it had slipped. It is the more graphic of the two 300 SL frames in this shop; the single-door version is the quieter one.

The frame that made it a spaceframe
The tubular structure that dictated the doors was borrowed from a racing car and gave the road car exceptional stiffness for very little weight, at the cost of sills deep enough to make getting in an event. The engineering is described as the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.
