“Leave enough empty sky and a portrait starts to breathe.”— Shazard R.
The camera sits low and the sitter tips forward, so the head and shoulders cut a diagonal across a sky with nothing in it. The white is left to do the work: there is no horizon, no street and no clue to where this is, only a face, a collar and the dark mass of the jacket.
It is a fashion portrait stripped back to shape and tone. On cotton rag paper the whites stay clean and the blacks of the jacket hold their weave rather than turning flat.

Shazard R.
Shazard R. is a Toronto photographer with fifteen years of professional work behind the camera, most of it in fashion and editorial. Those years built an eye for light, posture and the moment just before or after a pose.
Away from commissions, Shazard's own work leans cinematic: silhouettes held against the last of the light, portraits that read like stills from a film, and quiet studies of the city and its waterfront. The prints in this collection come from that personal archive, each one made to order and signed by hand.
