This New York poster looks up a working street rather than down at a skyline: traffic, storefronts and a one-way sign in the near ground, with the Empire State Building rising out of the middle of it all.
Skyline photographs of the city are interchangeable, because from across a river every city is a row of shapes. Street level is where it stops being interchangeable. The signage, the width of the road, the way the tower simply appears above ordinary buildings instead of being framed by them, are all specific.
A New York poster taken from the pavement
A vertical street with a tower at the end of it is a strong upward composition, so it belongs somewhere with height: a stairwell, a hallway, or above a narrow console. Monochrome keeps the signage from turning into clutter, which is what colour does to almost every street photograph of this city.
The building at the end of the street
It held the title of tallest building in the world for close to forty years and remains the most photographed structure in the city, which is why it can appear in the middle distance of a street photograph and still be the subject. Its history is at Wikipedia.
